Volver

I really like most of Almodovar's films, and if I don't like them I usually at least respect them. Volver was quite good. I saw it at an independant movie theatre in Winnipeg w/ some friends who weren't that familiar w/ Almodovar's work. It was a little funny to experience the film w/ them and I learned a new word (flipar=to flip). Carmen Maura was in the film (because it is required that she be in every Spanish film since 1980 on) and it was a little weird seeing her as an old woman. I just watched her in "What Have I done to Deserve This" and she was like 35-40, which makes sense since that was made in the 80's. But, the age jump was just a little much. She's aged well, I think most Spanish people do.
Anyway, I liked the film, but it was definitely not one of his best. The plot twists were fairly obvious, but the acting was genuine and the dialouge was funny. Their were also the obligatory disturbing moments and, because it's Almodovar, a hooker who was a completely accepted member of the community. It's worth a trip to the theatre or a rental when it comes out on disc.
