La Mala Educacion

I found this movie a bit graphic, but I was still surprised that it was rated NC17. The nudity was minimal, not anymore than in R movies. Although I would argue that some R movies should be moved to NC17 ratings rather than bumping this movie down to an R.
I was also really pleased at the accuracy in translation. It always makes me happy when I watch Spanish movies and can tell what is being said (Yeah for trying to be bilingual). Spanish movies are also very different from other movies from Spanish speaking countries. The European influence is really felt.
This movie was a little unique in that sympathy was achieved for all the characters even though they are all despicable in some way.
I have decided that I think Juan wasn't really gay. I think that he was just using his partners to get what he wanted. In that sense he was a very good actor. The weird thing about this conclusion is that I can't tell why I think that Juan wasn't gay. It could just be that he didn't seem explicitely attracted to Enrique.

I think this movie is very visually appealing. Especially with the variety of cuts and the great use of colors. Acting and directing also recieve high marks and story construction, which left you with several twists and gave you something to think about. On the other hand, I think I give this director a lot of leeway simply because he's the only Spanish director I can stand to watch at all.
It's definately not as good as Talk to Her which is an all time favorite but I prefered it to All About My Mother and you can't really compare the rest of his movies because they are so much lower budget though Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown still are quite fun.
As far as the rating business goes, I'd like it to be stated that I did ask before hand, because I was a bit worried. Also the first sex scene seemed more explict on the screen than on my little tv at home. Oh well, at least I'm glad I didn't try to bring Pillow Book (though it's a wonderful movie).

I'd also like to mention that I agree with Ivory that more movies should be rated NC-17 since there are more that are clearly meant solely for adults. It's unfortunate that the rating brings with it such a stigma. I think it's primarily due to the fact that currently people expect movies like Cronenberg's Crash or Greenaway's Cook, Thief, Wife, Lover to be as per usual with the rating.
